In my (early) 7th year of Drumming -- I realized (just today) that I'm ready for some of the more 'fun' aspects of the process: creating fills. -- To realize that 'fills' are NOT just some sequence(s) we can learn.... but; they are a dynamic process that pairs with the ability to improvise. -- Of course - this idea has been evident when working with the Bass, Snare, and Hi-Hats (only)... but -- I'm finding some joy in extending the concept to the rack and floor tom. -- For now: the Bass Drum is excluded (there is great power and insight when we practice with limits). ... more on 'Articulating Fills' 5-3-2024 I feel fluid with Triple-Time (triplets, sextuplets -- single strokes and combinations). But, Duple-Time always feels stiff. -- I think I'll continue to hate Duple-Time... until I develop the hands for it. -- It's the difference between Speed Metal and Thrash Metal: I Love "Thrash Metal" (and all its (slippery) 'triplet glory!' -- Speed Metal? ... not so much. --- It's the difference between Euro-Classical-Music and American-Blues-Jazz. THRASH lends itself to the latter. |
